MAKE NO BONES ABOUT IT: LOCAL TRAINER SAYS EXERCISE RELIEVES ACHES AND PAINS

(SAN JOSE, CA October 25, 2010) –When it comes to treatment or prevention of some painful chronic diseases, physical exercise can work wonders, says Brett Riesenhuber, personal trainer at Prime Physique Fitness & Adventure Boot Camp in San Jose, CA.

Riesenhuber says this message is especially timely since we had just marked two important health observances - Bone and Joint Decade National Action Week (October 12 to 20) and World Osteoporosis Day (October 20).

“Osteoporosis as well as joint and bone diseases, which include a variety of painful disorders, are commonly treated with medications,” Riesenhuber says. “However, there is enough evidence showing that lifestyle changes, including regular exercise specially adapted to each condition, can be very beneficial as well.”

Statistics show that nearly half of all Americans complain of bone and joint ailments such as arthritis and back pain; in fact, disorders affecting the body's muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments and nerves are the most common cause of severe long-term pain and physical disability in the United States.

Take arthritis, for example. Riesenhuber points out that, according to the Arthritis Foundation, a national non-profit organization that supports over 100 types of arthritis and related conditions, physical exercise helps relieve pain, improves physical function, and delays the progression of the disease.

“Sometimes drug therapy works and sometimes it doesn’t,” Riesenhuber says. “But even if medications are effective in managing pain, most doctors will advise their patients to also follow an exercise routine to reduce aches and stiffness, while strengthening the muscle around the joint, making it more stable.”

Another extremely common condition – chronic back pain – can also benefit from exercise, Riesenhuber says.

“Practically everyone suffers from backaches at one time or another, and some people have chronic pain. Here too, drugs can provide temporary relief but exercises that strengthen upper and lower back while improving the posture are very helpful in the long term.”

What about osteoporosis, a condition that strikes some 28 million Americans and contributes to an estimated 1.5 million bone fractures every year?

“Eating calcium and Vitamin D-rich foods or taking a supplement will help, but, again, these measures are most effective in conjunction with exercise,” Riesenhuber says.

He points to recommendations set out by the International Osteoporosis Foundation stating that exercise plays an important role in building and maintaining bone strength.

“You want your bones to be resistant to impact so they don’t break,” Riesenhuber says. “The best types of exercises for building and maintaining bone density are weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening workouts.”

Riesenhuber says he hopes the recent events focusing on bone and joint health have raised awareness about the importance of exercise in managing these conditions and encouraged people to be pro-active.

“These and many other diseases respond well to physical exercise,” he says. “The key is finding workouts that are specific to your health needs, and doing them on a regular basis.”
