LOCAL PERSONAL TRAINER: “BEAT DIABETES WITH REGULAR EXERCISE”
(SAN JOSE, CA November 4, 2010) – November is the American Diabetes Month, the purpose of which is to raise awareness about the prevention and treatment of this invasive illness, which affects an estimated 24 million Americans. Among the measures doctors recommend to keep this chronic and progressive disease under control is physical exercise.
“Obviously, someone who is a diabetic must be treated by a physician,” says Brett Riesenhuber, a personal trainer at Prime Physique Fitness and Adventure Boot Camp in San Jose, CA. “However, there is solid evidence to suggest that, along with other treatment options such as medication and diet, exercise can reduce the severity of the disease as well as the risk of long-term complications.”
These complications include adult blindness, kidney failure and limb amputation; diabetes is also a known factor in heart attacks and strokes, as well as the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.
This year’s observance of the Diabetes Month comes on the heels of the just-released study by the Center of Disease Control and Prevention predicting that the incidence of this illness will rise sharply over the next 40 years, impacting as many as one in three Americans; currently, one in 10 has it, predominantly the most common form, called type 2 diabetes.
There are several reasons why exercise is beneficial to people with type 2 diabetes. “Nearly 90 percent of these people are overweight and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes increases substantially if a person is overweight or obese,” Riesenhuber says. “Therefore, weight loss, achieved through both diet and physical activity, is effective in lowering elevated blood glucose levels in overweight and obese persons with type 2 diabetes.”
In fact, the National Institutes of Health Diabetes Prevention Program reported that lifestyle changes such as a healthier diet and increased exercise activity could reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by as much as 58 percent. The American Diabetes Association now recommends at least half an hour of physical activity five days a week.
“There are many ways in which exercise can be effective for people with diabetes,” Riesenhuber notes. “It increases insulin sensitivity and efficiency, lowers blood sugar levels, reduces body fat, and keeps blood pressure and cholesterol under control. All those things are very important if you have type 2 diabetes and want to prevent serious complications.”
Riesenhuber advises, however, that diabetics should consult their doctors before starting any exercise program.
“People with health conditions should never start any exercise routine without getting a check-up first,” he cautions. “However, once they get their physician’s ‘go-ahead,’ we can devise a customized exercise plan for them, a safe workout program geared specifically to their needs and abilities. The important thing is to never lose sight of the goal, which is better long-term health.”
