SAN JOSE TRAINER: FOR COMFORT AND JOY, STRESS-PROOF YOUR HOLIDAYS WITH EXERCISE
(SAN JOSE, CA December 2, 2010) -In many ways, the holiday season is – as the song says – the most wonderful time of the year. However, for many people this period can also be a source of great stress: The mad scramble for gifts and the effort involved in pulling off a “perfect” holiday can push us over the edge.
How big of a problem is it? Let it suffice to say that some studies indicate more than 80 percent of us find the holiday season to be maddeningly stressful.
All that is a recipe for disaster because stress – our body's physical and emotional response to demands and pressures from the outside world – can cause or aggravate a number of health conditions, such as chronic fatigue, upset stomach, headaches, panic attacks, insomnia, depression, and many other ailments. In extreme cases it can even lead to heart attacks and strokes.
“There is no question that the holiday season is a high-stress time of the year,” says Brett Riesenhuber, personal trainer at Prime Physique Fitness & Adventure Boot Camp in San Jose, CA, pointing out that about 43 percent of all adults suffer adverse health effects from stress. “What it comes down to is this: If you don’t learn to manage stress during the holidays, the season of peace and joy may turn out to be the season of physical and emotional upheaval that will spill over into the New Year.”
Riesenhuber says there are several effective stress relieving techniques, including meditation, breathing exercises, and muscle relaxation, among others.
“One sure way to reduce your stress level is exercise,” he points out. “Numerous studies have confirmed that a regular fitness regimen provides excellent stress-relieving benefits because it reduces the stress-causing hormones like cortisol and norepinephrine, while increasing blood flow and helping release endorphins, which are the ‘feel good’ chemicals.”
Of course, the mere fact that we carve out some time for ourselves during the hectic holiday season and do something positive for our health and well-being, is also a great tension reliever, Riesenhuber notes.
“Keeping up with the regular workout routine amid all the chaos is hugely beneficial,” he says. “That’s why the less time off you take from exercising, the better off you will be in the long run.”
What kind of fitness routine is the most effective stress-buster?
“That’s the beauty of it – any form of exercise is good,” Riesenhuber says. “If you can’t fit your usual routine into your holiday schedule, ask a fitness professional which exercises to include in your workout. Even an abridged ‘mini’ workout during these several weeks from Thanksgiving to New Year’s will be a significant stress reliever and an overall health booster.”
