LOS GATOS PERSONAL TRAINER: HEALTH REFORM IS PART OF YOUR LIFE

(SAN JOSE, CA February 2, 2010) – With 2010 drawn to a close, we can look back at a variety of issues that made news throughout the past year. One of the most divisive topics that will undoubtedly remain controversial in the New Year is the health reform.

“No matter how you feel about this subject, fact is it doesn’t have to be a purely political issue,” says Brett Riesenhuber, a Los Gatos personal trainer at Prime Physique Fitness & Adventure Boot Camp in San Jose, CA. “As we are entering the New Year, we should make health reform and health care in general a priority in our own lives.”

Riesenhuber points out that while we may not have total control over certain medical conditions and diseases, in many instances we can influence the state of our health with the right lifestyle choices.

“Look back at 2010 and ask yourself: ‘Have I been as pro-active about my health as I could have been?’ If not, what can you do to improve the situation in the New Year?”

How can we become better advocates for our own health? “Start by getting educated about the prevention of most common and serious diseases,” he says. “Then, do the things that are proven to minimize the risks while maximizing your health.”

There are many ways that are medically and scientifically proven to boost our resistance to various diseases and increase our longevity, Riesenhuber points out. For example:

Exercise: “Numerous studies have shown that regular physical activity cuts the risk of most serious conditions such as heart disease, strokes, diabetes, high blood pressure, some forms of cancer, osteoporosis, obesity, as well as joint pain. It also boosts the immune system, helps fight stress and maintain a healthy body weight.”

Nutrition: “Healthy diet based on fruits, vegetables, grains, low-fat dairy products, and lean protein, is essential to physical well-being and weight control. In conjunction with regular exercise, it is about the best health booster you can find.”

Get rid of toxic habits: “You probably know that cigarettes are harmful to your health. Smoking is probably the most hazardous lifestyle choice you can make – it puts you at risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer and emphysema, among other serious conditions. So quitting should be your number 1 priority in your health reform plan.”

Drink in moderation: “Another habit you should not over-indulge in is heavy drinking. While an occasional glass of wine or beer will do no harm (unless you are driving afterwards), too much can lead to blood clot problems, liver inflammation or cirrhosis (possibly fatal scarring), and stomach ulcers. There is also evidence that people who drink too much are twice as likely to die from a stroke or heart attack, as well as suffer from stomach and lung cancer. And, of course, alcohol is quite caloric, so heavy drinking will pile on the extra pounds.”

The take-home message is clear, Riesenhuber says: “Exercise, eat sensibly, quit harmful habits, and get regular check-ups. Regardless of what happens in the political arena, these simple steps will lay a solid foundation for your own health reform plan.”
